Polymer Clay Basics
Polymer Clay Basics
Polymer Clay is a synthetic clay that will remain malleable until fired in an oven.
Polymer clay is impressionable. It can take on the form of many shapes and textures.
Polymer clay needs to be conditioned before sculpting.
How to condition Polymer Clay
Remove the desired amount of clay needed.
With your hands, start to knead the clay until it softens.
Note: Polymer Clay elasticity is affected by temperature. The warmer the clay, the easier it is to manipulate.
Once softened, roll the clay to remove any air bubbles.
The clay is now conditioned.
Shaping Polymer Clay
Cookie Cutter/Clay Cutter Method:
Roll the clay flat until the desired amount of thickness.
Use a sheet of paper to smooth the surface if needed.
Choose a cutter and firmly press it into the clay.
Remove all scrap pieces of clay.
Add raw clay to the tray to prepare for baking.
Sculpture Method:
Using conditioned clay, separate the desired amount of clay needed.
Roll the piece into a ball.
Using clay tools, begin to sculpt your design.
Note: To connect pieces, you can use toothpicks, foil, & adhesive before baking.
Once the design is complete, move to the tray to prepare for baking.
Baking Polymer Clay
Time and temperature vary depending on the brand of clay.
Following the instructions on the packaging, preheat the oven to the right temperature.
Note: Baking polymer clay on a smooth, non-shiny surface is best.
Bake until the time noted on the packaging.
Remove immediately from the oven and set aside to cool for at least 5 minutes.
Finishing Polymer Clay
After baking, polymer Clay can be painted, buffed, polished, sanded, and glazed with UV resin.
You can drill into it to attach jewelry findings and more.
You can use adhesives to attach them to various items.
Polymer clay is a great starting clay for those who want to build and create items that will be ready within moments of starting.
